A raunchy poem using found words and borrowed type from; adverts, packaging and promotions for - and interviews about - asparagus from the 1920s to the modern day.

A collaboration with Clare Howdle for 26 Flavours of Cornwall*.

Oh sparrowgrass,
Sweet river maid,
Oh yes!
It’s a delight, to go down deep,
To please milady.

We’re wet, surely a-flush,
This air of stiffness,
This sensory power.
We mustn’t let it go too far.

Spring up,
Put up, you
King-o-hearts,
Stimulate tender freshness,
On my pantry shelf.

You go very well,
I’ll take what comes,
Nor need you ever hesitate,
Joy bountiful!

Crown me, my dear,
Lead the way,
Plunge succulent spears,
Tips and long,
Your skilled touch,
Enthusiastically welcome,
Two or three days in a row;
Back breaking.

Eat. Eat. Eat.
Gosh.
We grow the best.

*26 Flavours of Cornwall paired 26 writers with 26 designers, matched each team with an item of Cornish produce and challenged them to come up with pieces of art that combine words and design in the form of paper table-settings. The exhibition is at Trebah Garden every day from Friday 1 July to Tuesday 26 July.

Organised by the national writers’ association 26, working with the Cornwall Design Forum and University College Falmouth.

Clare blogged about the 'Asparagus team' here, and you can order an A2 print here.

Research project on Design Direction.

This is not a Manifesto, it is a statement of intent. It is not about what I have done, it is about what I propose to do. After all, my intentions are far more interesting than my achievements to date. I don’t need a business card for what I’ve already done, but I need one for what I want to do. My Design Direction is motivated by purpose, opposition &#38; self-initiated reform. Comprenhensive &#38; appropriate.
_

Be an Artist, Designer &#38; Scientist

The spheres of Art, Design &#38; Science are all concerned with trying to make sense of the world around us. Design could be described as being halfway between Art &#38; Science.

At the end of the 19th century these spheres were much closer together. It was in the early period of the 20th century, with industrialisation and political upheaval, that saw many key representatives of the avant-garde position themselves away from the sphere of art, in favour of various pragmatic forms of design. Over the course of the following hundred years these spheres pulled further apart. We need to pull them back together.

It is human nature to try to understand what is around us. Our curiosity is our primary driver. Art &#38; Science are interrelated because they both have the capacity to improve the world. By bringing them closer together we not only increase our understanding but by allowing them to react with each other we also increase our ability to succeed.

Designers need to be good observers, as Design relies on cultural references, therefore it is vital for designers to open up their horizons. If you only look at one sphere then your output will always result in the very same thing. It is important to continually move your points of reference.

‘Is it Art or is it Design? The thing called creativity cuts right through that argument.’ Gordon Young
_

Define the purpose

Art’s role is sometimes defined simply as 'raising a question', whereas the role of design is seen to be to provide answers. When viewed as just a problem solver, the designer is not in a position to define the purpose. Only by creating new opportunities or initiating projects can a designer reposition themselves away from working in accordance with commission.

'Practice has shown that the work of true artistic worth can be created only when the artist sets his own objective (the internal social commission).' El Lissitzky
_

Think comprehensively

We can characterize the way people think using these terms borrowed from evolutionary biology, you are either a lumper or a splitter. Lumpers will tend to look at a problem holistically while splitters try to pick apart the smallest detail. There is no right or wrong way, it is possible to make breakthroughs in our understanding of the world either way. However if you do not know which one you are, it is probably a good idea to work it out. Being a lumper is about joining the dots and thinking comprehensively, this is the type of thinking that exists between the spheres of Art &#38; Science.

'I refuse to treat diverse subjects as specialized areas of investigation, because it inhibits my ability to think intuitively, independently, and comprehensively.’ Buckminster Fuller
_

Use all modes of expression

Human Intelligence begins with conception; it is our prime mental activity. A concept is only fixed when it is embodied in a symbol, It is the culmination in some form of symbolic expression that we as designers need to understand and explore. We must learn the various modes of expression ie; language, myth, audible, artistic, mathematical etc. It is in the difference between the concept and the symbol that we find the grey area, this difference is where we find the poetry.

‘The magic of the concept and the charm of the real.’ Jean Baudrillard

Cornwall Design Season, a 9 week, multi-site celebration of Cornish creativity and ingenuity. The spine of which is an exhibition of Cornish design stories, interpreted as an installation by an artist or designer in fifteen different shipping containers throughout Cornwall.

I was given the story of the Cornish Shovel to bring to life.

Nominated by: Paul Masters, Assistant Chief Executive, Cornwall Council
Exhibition designed by: Dion Star
Location: Carbis Bay Beach, St Ives / 19 Feb – 2 Apr

A Libra, a Lurgan, a Cardigan, and a Pasty. These names are all associated with a design more commonly recognised as the Cornish Shovel. This humble tool’s simple but life-changingly efficient design has made hard physical labour that much more bearable – from 18th-century mines to 21st century gardens.

Whatever you wish to call it, this device was developed in the early 1700s to help Cornish miners dig in cramped conditions with minimal back-lift. Unlike the unforgiving English Spade, the Cornish Shovel spared unnecessary back strain – its long, arcing handle and pointed head allowed the user to dig and twist the shovel, loosening the rock or soil while keeping an upright posture and providing enough leverage to prise open the hard, rocky ground miners had to dig through.

As Cornish miners migrated in the mid-19th century, escaping mining’s decline at home and following the mineral bounty in the New World, so their superior shovels joined them and their reputation spread. Stories tell of miners using their Cornish Shovels as makeshift oven trays to hold over campfires, as well as impromptu pasty-flinging competitions with their shovels in their spare time. Whether this is true or not is up for debate, but one thing is for sure – their creation has made digging a whole lot less painful for dozens of generations of people. Gardeners the world over will be nodding their heads.

The Making of Benzanoe 64

The introduction page required the type to be hand drawn directly onto the wall. With a little help from some friends — including a monumental effort from Mat Mcivor (chap with cap &#38; glasses) — I set about the task with a projector, some posca pens &#38; plenty of elbow grease.

“The printed artifact always carries with it belief; underpinned by a historic and cultural relationship between print and truth. Issue 64 deals directly with this concept through a series of installations, representing the pages of the magazine. The content is delivered through playing with perspective, perception, resolution, view point and production.“</description>

Issue 64: Graphic Dasein* What does intangible look like?

“The printed artifact always carries with it belief; under pinned by a historic and cultural relationship between print and truth. Issue 64 deals directly with this concept through a series of installations, representing the pages of the magazine. The content is delivered through playing with perspective, perception, resolution, view point and production.“
